""The Last of this Wonderful Apple iMac Generation"" 2009-05-17
By Priscilla Cory
I'm so glad I was able to find this generation made by Apple Macintosh computer here on Amazon with the Tiger 10.4 OS, which Apple Store themselves no longer sells. I have many, priceless, invaluable Classic Applications/Programs that can only run up to this particular OS. It's the last of the Operating Systems made to support Classic by Apple. Classic Applications won't work on Intel Core machines or the Leopard OS, so it must be Tiger OS or before, supporting OS 9. The newer children of these Classic Applications/Programs are not as good as the originals and some no longer made like Claris, they don't compare to what one can do with them, so they are a must to keep, cherish and be able to utilize. Macintosh computers have always been utilized in my family for their business and graphic art expertise of finer, advanced, professional outcomes. I would never even consider a Windows, or any other for fear of problems with viruses, the lack of uncomplicated use, etc., etc. Thankfully I never had a virus with Macintosh, since I began on them in 2003, only slight bugs here and there, resolved in a minutes time. The Apple Support team is always there for me, thru here online, the Apple Stores, or their 800 no., with answers to all my questions in times of need, with resolve.

My Macintosh computer before this one was the Panther OS, 17" screen, in 2004 in which I bought two, one for a family member and one for myself. They were brand spanking new off the Apple Store floor. A year later I purchased refurbished iMacs for family members, with the Tiger OS 20" as surprise Christmas gifts. Now it's my turn to have the best of both worlds in an Apple iMac computer, to still utilize my Classic Applications/Programs and now with the bigger 20" screen that I'm absolutely in awe of. I'm very pleased that I made this wise decision and bought this, the last of this generation of Apple iMacs to support Classic. Hurray! And thank you Amazon Marketplace and vendor Michael, at Vema Electronics :D

I bought mine in March 2006 and the display died October 2007. If you don't have the extended warranty it will cost $$$ if anything on the logic board fails or if the LCD panel fails. Since the video card is part of the logic board you don't have many options for repair. I wish it had a DVI output for an external monitor since you cannot currently connect it to any displays that Apple sells. The quality of the DVI connection is much better than the mini-VGA present on this iMac. Otherwise it's a great OS X machine. When the display worked, it was beautiful.

"iMac G5 will last you a long, long time" 2007-08-02
By A. Deal Finder (Texas)
I have owned all 3 revisions of the iMac G5 and can tell you these are the best Mac computers. The all-in-one design is so simple and elegant. The latest Rev. C iMac G5 at 2.1GHz is the fastest yet. What really makes this computer move is the improved graphics chip, a 128MB ATI X600, much faster than the 128MB Radeon 9600 on the Rev. B iMac, and much, much faster than the64MB Nvidia 5200 FX of the Rev. A iMac.

A nice addition to this iMac G5 2.1GHz is the iSight webcam. You need a high-speed (cable or DSL) internet connection to really take advantage of it. My kids can see and talk with Grandma and Grandpa in another state, who they hardly get to see in person. But with iChat AV and the iSight they can talk on a regular basis.

The included software bundle is almost complete. I say almost because you get email, web browsing, iChat AV, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and others, but really is lacking a good word processor. So I bought Microsoft Word, which runs great on this computer for word processing. It is nice to have everything include and work so perfectly. I even sync my bluetooth phone.

I have had this iMac for over 1.5 years and plan to keep it for a very long time. 2.1GHz and with the updated video card with 128MB video RAM will keep me going for a long time. Oh yeah, also make sure to upgrade the RAM by adding a 1GB or even a 2GB memory module. I put in a 1GB for 1.5GB total, and it runs all my apps just fine, with memory to spare. 2.5GB total would have been overkill and $$$ wasted.

Also, this iMac runs many of the OS 9 apps that will NOT run on the newer intel models. Yes, you still run across OS 9 only apps from time to time, so this is VERY important and why I will be keeping my iMac G5 for a long time.

"The Last of the "PowerPC" Macs" 2007-07-24
By Andrew Shaffer (Davenport, Iowa)
The 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 Mac Mini (512 MB DDR SDRAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) was one of the last PowerPC Macs released before the "Intel invasion." When I purchased mine the week before the Intels were announced, they placed my order on "hold" to give me a chance to buy the Intel version. I declined the upgrade, and haven't looked back since. The Mac Mini has worked like a charm for the past year-plus. For what I use it for (MS Word, web surfing, iTunes, DVD watching, and even Photoshop), I haven't noticed anything that an Intel could improve upon speedwise. The PowerPC is dead...long live the PowerPC!

 "Mac Mini's Are Great!" 2007-01-03
By Christopher Deweese (USA)
I've had my mini for about a year and have been very pleased with it. If you are going to do simple computing (managing photos, music, internet, etc.) then this computer will do the job and then some. I've been an Apple fan for a long time and have had several products over the years (two iPods, G3 blue & white, cinema display, etc.) and I have to say the mini is one of my favorites. The compact design is what all computers should strive for. The OS is stable and I've had no technical problems with it. I'm a very satisfied customer.

"Nice little machine for a newbie" 2006-12-13
By Tezza (USA)
I bought the Mac Mini, owned it for six months then sold it. Now I'm getting a core duo.

Here's the pro's and cons of this machine:

PRO's

- Great small form factor.

- Quiet

- Nice stable operating system

- Bug resistant, you don't have to buy antivirus software.

- Comes with some nice but basic software.

- Office for MAC is nicer software than Office for PC.

- Great apple keyboard (has extra USB ports to make up for the lack of ports on the back of the mini.

- Awesome apple keyboard -- best in the business.

- Airport extreme wireless works well, easy to configure and picks up well.

- Good machine for "newbies".

CONS

- Maybe just slightly slow.

- Get as big a monitor as possible (19 inches or more) because the software doesn't make good use of monitor real estate.

- If your a power user, this machine will leave you lacking. Better to get a PC.

- Apple mouse is terrible. Go get an optical mouse from Walmart for cheap $$'s.

- Not all printers work with Apple, choose carefully.

- Not really upgradeable.

All in all, it's a nice machine for kids I think, but pretty soon they will be kicking you off your laptop PC as they become more advanced "power users".

 "Amazon Rocks" 2006-03-06
By Wendy A. Anna (Buffalo, NY United States)
A lot of the reason I am so pleased with the Mac Mini has to do with Amazon.com. Great customer service, price, shipping. Buying this from the Apple store would have cost me $150 more. Now, about the computer-

First off, I was shipped a unit with upgraded Processor (1.5ghz) and Video. Also the Superdrive is dual layer, not single although I haven't been able to see if it works as a DL. So I'm pretty pleased that I have an upgrade right off the bat.

The slogan says BYODKM, so I'll tell you how I have it set up. Apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse and the display is a 50' plasma TV. This is a really cool setup for my kids, playing educational games.

About 2 days after the unit was delivered, Apple released the new Intel version of the Mini. Initially I was disappointed, but after looking at the new specs I realized I had bought the better PPC version. The Intel version shares video with the 512 main memory and has no dedicated chipset seperate.

The positives are: Small form factor, great performance, price. You just can't beat OS X in terms of reliability. I will not miss being a system administrator on my wife's dell, constantly scanning and removing malware. Price-Got mine with a superdrive for $630 shipped.

Negatives: Memory. Although units shipping now have a standard 512k, I really think I'll need to upgrade to at least 1mb. Also, after having been a Powerbook user, there is a perceptable difference in the build quality. Not bad mind you, but not quite up to par with the Powerbooks.

Overall, a great machine if you already have your keyboard/mouse/display. If not, the new imac is a much better value. Why only 4 instead of 5 stars? Well, the superdrive seems to only want to burn at 2X, not the 8X as advertised. Apple has nothing to remedy this issue yet, but will probably issue a firmware upgrade sometime.

So my advice is to take the plunge and switch over to OS X, you'll be very happy you did.

"Made the switch to Apple Macintosh." 2007-01-26
By Mitch (Mission Viejo, CA)
After years of using PC's with a "virus" called Windows, I made the switch to Macintosh with an iBook G4 and the iMac G5 and haven't regretted it since. The operating system is rock solid. In fact, after nearly two years of using both Mac's, I haven't had the OS crash even ONCE. Sure, I've had some applications hang up or quit unexpectedly, but they NEVER took the operating system with it (I just used "Force Quit" and tried again). As a comparison, my old Windows 98 system couldn't make it 2 hours without needing a re-boot.

Yes, there isn't as much software available for the Mac's, but if you look around a while, you can find a program that'll do whatever a PC can do, many times even better.

No viruses, no spyware, no non-sense. The Macintosh just works.

 "Quality computer" 2006-05-27
By Eric Robertson
I purchased this model recently as my first Apple computer. Coming from a Unix background, the initial experience is a bit of a mixed bag. Some things are highly annoying, for example, not only is gcc, an absolutely essential piece of unix software, not available at install time, but it is a massive chore to even get on the system, and in the end you have little choice but to install Apple's Xcode tools.

The root account is disabled by default, as are a number of services such as ssh. Several traditional Unix pathnames have been changed inexplicably, for example, the home directory is called Users in the mac os. Options for other operating systems are largely limited to Linux.

This computer comes pre-installed with a number of slick looking and useful programs, mirroring the operating system itself. These are rather heavily biased towards multimedia. It is nice to have a working microphone and camera out of the box, however.

Overall, the operating system is good, but it could be better. Apple fans will throw it in with other unix systems like FreeBSD. In a lot of ways, the Mac OS is not in the same league as FreeBSD, and the inverse is also true. The typical user will get more out of the Mac OS because of its multimedia features while the programmer or network administrator will probably get more out of a more traditional unix system because of the readily available programming and networking tools.

As far as the hardware goes, there's a lot of FUD going around about the switch to Intel. It is true that the Intel processors have higher clock rates, but just as horsepower is only the definitive measure of a car to the uninformed, so too is the clock rate of a processor. The Intel architecture has some key disadvantages when compared to powerpc. One of the obvious ones is the register set. Registers are small, extremely fast memory for a processor. The 32 bit x86 architecture has 8 32 bit registers that are used as general purpose along with a few special purpose registers. The 32 bit powerpc implementation architechture features 32 general purpose registers, also 32 bit, as well as 32 64 bit floating point registers, in addition to a set of special purpose registers. Why is this important? Because in the register starved x86 architecture, there is more dependence on operations on the slower RAM. With the powerpc architecture, the programmer can load values into registers, manipulate the contents of those registers as necessary, and store the results back in memory. This is one reason why a "slower" powerpc will have better performance than a "faster" intel. Of course, since the intel processors have higher clock rates, you can concoct tests that will favor them, but these have little bearing on reality. The Intel strategy for at least the past ten years has been to increase the clock rate steadily and not really improve the architecture.

 "iMac G5 - 17 in. BEST VALUE" 2006-05-20
By Lida Goodhart (Philadelphia, PA)
I bought my iMac G5 3 weeks ago, not from Amazon; but from the Apple Store (Refurbished for $999). This was absolutely the best value I couldve gotten: especially since because of recent iPod purchases, I got a $100 eCoupon. (You should definately try requesting one).

Anyway, I got a great, fast computer: and only for $899! I dont know why people would need to fork up another 100 bucks to get a 20" model with only 1.83 GHz processing speed.

With the superdrive, iSight built in, 160 GB HD, and more... I think this is the best value for an Apple Computer available: but if you think you may need windows, go and buy an Intel machine to download Windows into it. Be aware that its almost impossible to find some software on a mac, but takes less than 5 minutes for Windows...

 "iMac G5, plenty fast!" 2006-02-24
By P. Mrozinski (Historic Mineral Point WI)
I actually purchased this iMac for my cousin who was tired of the Windows world. She is extremely happy with this iMac and wonders why she waited so long to go back to a Mac. The built in iSight camera is a great addition. The Front Row software is also nice, though limited in use. I set it up for her without a hitch, fast and easy. Getting her set with her DSL account was also a breeze. The screen is bright and clear and the added Mighty Mouse is a nice bonus. I have experience with iMacs since their debut in 1998, this is by far the most refined and elegant design. Apple has definitely hit the bulls-eye with this one. As far as G5 vs. intel goes, my choice would be the G5 if you have existing software that has not or will not be updated for awhile and you need to work now. If you are starting from scratch, I guess I would go with the intel version. That being said, I don't usually buy the first version of anything. Hope this helps and frankly, you can't go wrong with either model.

I have always been a pc girl, even though i've work on macs for years. what i liked about this is i could hook it up to, and actualy share my pc's peripherals. i have two towers (this and a dell compact) but one monitor, keyboard and mouse. with a share switch and a simple key shortcut i can go back and forth between the two systems. plus, i found it to be very affordable.

as far as performance this little guy is a powerhouse. i did actually buy it with 512mb ram and upgraded to 1g. it worked out cheaper. i have a huge music library on it, and use my adobe programs all the time. no slow photoshop on this bad boy.

oh, and it is quite a looker.

 "Terrible product and service" 2006-10-25
By Mad (CO, USA)
We purchased our first mac mini after hearing everyone tell us how great mac products are. Unfortunately after one day it crashed and would no longer boot up. We were able to get a replacement after of a good bit of frustration. However we were in the process of moving and were not able to move into our new home and unpack for a couple of months. Whithin a couple of weeks guess what. Our top notch mac mini had started locking up and we had to go through all kinds of things to get it to boot back up and then it quit starting up all together. Of course when we contacted apple all they would do is repair it since we were approaching 90 days since we had purchased it and they only give you 30 days to return it. I erronously thought that given the situation Apple would be happy to replace our second now defunct computer in less the ninety days and it would acutally be our third if you counted our mac pro notebook. Wrong. I wouldn't by an Apple if you want something that works for more than a short while before you need to fix it.

 "MACTABULOUS!!!" 2006-02-21
By Daniel McKinnon (Tewksbury, MA USA)
For all those people who are concerned about space restrictions and want a powerhouse computer that will not need a large footprint, the Mac Mini is the perfect solution. Packing a boatload of power into a computer yay bigger than a coaster, there is no better power/space combination in the entire computing world!

For all the Windows users who don't want to make the switch to the Mac, with the newest Mac OS you will not look back once you get used to the ways that Apple does things the way they are SUPPOSED to be done.

As per usual Apple, the design of the Mac Mini is perfect, and it's so quiet that your own heartbeat will no doubt be louder than this quiet monster.

If you need a solid family computer that will allow you to surf the net, work with spreadsheets, check e-mail, or just do 99% of the things that you would like to be doing (I don't say 100% because it's not a gaming machine), pick up a Mac Mini for your home office, kitchen, ANYWHERE and you will NOT be disappointed!!

***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

"Great form factor for a good price" 2005-07-05
By S.E. Poza (Rimersburg, PA)
It's funny how Apple offers a low price computer and everyone feels it should be faster and more full-featured than it is but similarly-priced PCs seem not to carry such expectations.

It's important to face reality before buying a computer that is low cost. No $500-$600 machine is going to be a games/graphics/audio/video powerhouse. The Mini is no exception in this regard. It's a consumer model designed for modest everyday computing demands. It's not that it won't run high end software nor that it won't run such software adequately. I use my Mini for various Adobe applications (and only Illustrator seems sluggish on start up) as well as DVD Studio Pro work. It's not intolerably slow but it's also not lightning fast. It is, however, quite adequate with processor-intensive applications.

When it comes to running OS X and other consumer applications, it works very well. The Mini was my transitional machine between OS 9 and OS X. It's a good way for those who have been reluctant to make the move to spend less and learn OS X.

A lot of people feel too much is made of Apple's designs and any performance/upgrade sacrifices that they force should be more strongly focussed upon but there clearly is a desire for very small computers like the Mini. If using a computer were only a matter of running applications, wireless networks would not have grown in popularity as their signals are inferior to wired connections. People want something attractive and small that they can accomodate more easily on their overcrowded desks.

Form factor isn't everything but it is increasingly important where the power of high end machines greatly exceeds the needs of the consumer level user and the cheaper consumer models are roughly similarly capable despite a few statistical differences here and there. The Mini is an attractive alternative to tower-sized consumer models and those who would like to run the Mac OS as a secondary machine or a machine that only needs to meet the needs of the average user.

"An extremely well built little piece of technology with a few weak points..." 2005-07-03
By eddieMcNair (Il, USA)
Well, first of all let me say that the mini is a relatively large amount of power packaged in very little space. Everything is extremely easy to install and if you get the wireless mouse and keyboard you will be saving a USB port, which is always a good thing.

There are a couple of things that could have been done better. For instance, the RAM, 256 M of Ram is a joke for any system using the OS Tiger, I am sure a lot of people are frustrated because their minis do not perform as they should. Low RAM is a major bottleneck on Tiger; the thing is so big and powerful that anything lower than 512 will hamper your system.

Anyways, after upgrading the ram on the mini I configured it as a small server for a couple of Sites I had to get online and I think it is performing superb. I dint have to spend a cent on extra software (I am using Apache and PHP, both are free and work great on the UNIX based Tiger OS), and my cable Internet connection is up to the task of keeping the sites running smoothly.

I wouldn't recommend this for a huge e-commerce site, but it should be more than adequate for sites that only generate a couple of thousands of visits a day.
